St. Joseph’s Church

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church

St Joseph's Church

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church is on land donated to the church in 1863 by R.S. Miller and Alex Deering who were owners of the Mariposa Gold Mine which was located directly behind the church property. Construction was financed by subscription in 1862 under direction of Rev. Louis A. Auger and completed in that same year. The church was consecrated by Archbishop Joseph Sadoc Alemany on January 19 1863. The church is still in use today and holds regularly scheduled services.

St Joseph’s Cemetery is located directly behind the church where you can stroll through and read some of the names and epitaphs that made Mariposa what it is to day.

This is just one of the many historical points of interest in Mariposa California.
