This story, although fictional in form, is based on historical events at the Wawona Hotel.  Clarence Washburn was the son of John Washburn, one of the three brothers who built the Wawona Hotel, and Grandson of Thomas Hill the famous Landscape artist.  It is through Clarence’s daughter, Wawona Washburn Hartwig that Danette came to know of the story behind the Little Wawona Wagon, which was bequeathed to her upon Wawona’s death.
